Safety is our No. 1 priority.

The development of new nuclear power capacity in Bulgaria is based entirely on strict adherence to the current Bulgarian and European regulatory framework, as well as to best international practices, including the standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Western European Nuclear Regulators’ Association.

The chosen AP1000 technology from Westinghouse Electric Company represents an advanced Generation III+ pressurised water reactor that combines safety systems with a focus on high reliability, simplified design, and reduced likelihood of accident situations.
The project is developed based on proven technologies and many years of operational experience, and includes:

  • a range of physical barriers to retain radioactive substances;
  • components and systems based on established engineering solutions;
  • modern digital control systems with a high degree of verification;
  • constructive solutions that reduce complexity and facilitate operation and decommissioning.

The AP1000 has undergone extensive international assessments and licensing processes. The design has been certified by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, resulting in the reliable construction and operation of Vogtle Units 3 and 4 in the US (which are the reference units for Units 7 and 8), as well as four units in China.

The accumulated experience confirms the maturity and predictability of the project. It is also subject to international reviews outside of countries with existing facilities. With regard to European requirements, AP1000 has undergone an assessment of compliance with the European Utility Requirements. Lessons learned from the Fukushima accident have been analysed and integrated, including within the framework of the UK Generic Design Assessment (GDA), which thoroughly examines design solutions against current safety expectations.

As part of the licensing process, comprehensive technical information will be provided to enable an independent and in-depth assessment. This will ensure that all systems and components meet current standards for nuclear safety and radiation protection.

Our goal is clear – to realise a project that meets the highest modern safety standards, with full transparency and in dialogue with all stakeholders, and in effective cooperation with the competent authorities and institutions.
