The Environmental Impact Assessment decision is current and valid

A number of false and speculative statements have recently appeared in the public sphere and the media regarding the validity of the EIA Decision No. 1-1/2015 of the Minister of Environment and Water, which approved the investment proposal for the construction of a new nuclear power plant of the latest generation on Site 2 of the Kozloduy NPP, approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Agency.

The Council of Ministers has decided on the full utilisation of the approved site's capacity at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, through the rational use of equipment from the Belene Nuclear Power Plant.„

On January 20, 2021, at its meeting, the government considered a report of a Working Group specially established by the Minister of Energy. The report presents in a synthesized form the analyses and assessments of the feasibility studies carried out by "Kozloduy NPP - New Build" in recent years.

Programme for continuous environmental monitoring

In compliance with the conditions and measures of the EIA Decision, which approved the implementation of the project for the construction of a new nuclear capacity at the Kozloduy NPP site and the instructions of the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, described in the Order for the approval of the preferred site for the location of the nuclear facility, activities have been launched to prepare a Program for permanent environmental monitoring.

Investigating ways to fully utilise the potential of the licensed site at Kozloduy NPP

At its meeting on October 14, 2020, the Council of Ministers /CoM/ decided to undertake preparatory actions and study the possibilities for building a new nuclear power plant at the site at Kozloduy NPP approved by Order No. AA-04-30/21.02.2020 of the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, in the context of achieving the European Union's goals for climate neutrality by 2050 and diversification of energy resources.
