The 60th regular session of the IAEA General Conference.
On October 23, 1956, the Statute of the International Atomic Energy Agency was approved. In this regard, the First Session of the General Conference of the Agency was held in October 1957. This year, from September 26 to 30, the sixtieth regular session of the General Conference of the IAEA will be held. In this regard, the Secretariat of the Agency plans to hold a number of events and activities through which the significant contribution of the IAEA to international peace, to the current and future development of nuclear energy will be noted. All IAEA member states will participate in the Conference, with the Bulgarian delegation led by the Chairman of the NRA - Dr. Lachezar Kostov.
On the first day of the Conference, a ceremonial reception is planned to mark the beginning of the sixtieth General Conference. A photo exhibition focusing on the main events, projects and achievements since the establishment of the Agency to the present day has been opened in the building of the International Centre in Vienna, Austria. A special bulletin and a series of short documentaries related to the activities of the IAEA have been developed for the occasion. One of the most significant events is the organization of a Special Scientific Forum with high-level discussions in connection with the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015. The Forum is under the title „How nuclear technologies can help countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals“.
The main topics to be discussed by the delegates and the resolutions to be debated are in the field of: – strengthening international cooperation in the field of nuclear safety, radiation protection, safe transportation of radioactive materials and RAW management; – strengthening the activities of the IAEA in the field of technical cooperation, nuclear science, technologies and their applications; – improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the system of Safeguards under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, as well as their implementation in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Middle East.
The agenda of the conference includes the election of officers and the appointment of a General Committee. The meeting will consider applications for admission to the international agency. The IAEA's annual report for 2015 will be discussed, as well as issues related to the 2017 budget.
